Parent Newsletter – Issue 2, 2026

The year commenced with the school swimming carnival. The day saw fantastic student involvement, as students enjoyed the beautiful weather, dressed in their house colours, and passionately chanted their house songs.

Congratulations to ngamayi (Yellow) House, who claimed the day with the winning total of 115 points. wurru-wurru in 2nd and yaluk in 3rd.

The Community Breakfast was held on Tuesday, 10 February, across all campuses. The event provided a valuable opportunity for students, parents and carers to connect with staff and one another in a relaxed setting. With the sun shining, the morning offered a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and families enjoyed a shared breakfast before the commencement of Session 2 for the students. Campus Principals addressed attendees, formally welcoming families to the new school year.

Jillian English

Principal

Thanks to all the wonderful teachers, parents and friends who made the time to come along to the first ‘informal’ gathering of Friends of Footscray High School for 2026.

The get together was at Bar Josephine in Footscray, at 7pm on Tuesday 10th Feb 2026.

Special thanks to Jill English, John Box and Jen Bashford for coming along and for their continued support of the group.

It was a great success, with a decent turn-out and a lot of interest from new parents keen in contributing to the life of the school and its community.

We also had some interest by parents wanting to know how they might be able to help in the positions of Treasurer and President for the coming year – If that sounds like you, we’d be keen to hear from you!

If you are interested in knowing more about our group, and our fund-raising efforts, then feel free to get in touch with us, at: friendsoffootscrayhighschool@gmail.com

Below are some happy snaps from the get together at Bar Josephine.

Alec, one of our Year 9 Barkly Students, won the Youth (Secondary School) Prize for the New Footscray Hospital Photography Exhibition recently. His photo will feature digitally in the Hospital.

One of the judges from Footscray Community Arts approached him to commend him for his photo, which she described as a ‘stand out’ piece across all entries.

Junior Food Studies has had a fantastic start to the year! Our Year 9 students have been exploring how changes in temperature affect browning and cooking rates, the Year 8s have been tackling food waste by creating delicious veggie fritters, and our Year 7s have been working on their knife safety and skills while preparing vibrant rainbow fruit kebabs. It’s been wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and creativity in the kitchen already.

All students will shortly be developing their 2026 Career Action Plans.

The Action plan is an essential tool that helps young people understand themselves, make informed decisions, and prepare for life beyond school.

The process of creating a plan promotes self-reflection, allowing students to identify their strengths, interests, values, and motivations. This understanding helps students set meaningful goals and see clear connections between their learning, personal development, and future career options.

Career Action Plans evolve as students’ progress through school.

In Years 7–8, the plan supports early exploration of interests and the world of work.

In Years 9–10, the plan informs subject and certificate choices aligned with students’ aspirations.

In Years 11–12, the plan provides a structured framework for decision-making about further education, training, or employment pathways.

Importantly, Career Action Plans link classroom learning with real-world experiences, such as work experience, and in year 9, the My Career Insights (Morrisby) activities.

Students build lifelong career management skills, improve transition outcomes, and enhance well-being by giving students a sense of direction and preparedness for their next steps.

Parents can play a vital role by discussing the plan with your child, as you are the career experts. Your real-life experience is invaluable.

Please talk to your son or daughter and explore ideas, share experiences, and celebrate their progress.

The action plan helps students feel supported as they consider their future pathways.

Year 7, 8 and 9 students will start completing plans during March.

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) helps eligible families with the costs of camps, sporting activities and excursions/incursions.

Families with a valid Centrelink pensioner concession OR Health Care card number (CRN) can apply. You can list more than one student on the same application form if they are attending the same school.

We can accept and process CSEF applications until 26 June 2026. Please find below the link with more information, and also a downloadable form to apply:
