Late last term, a small group of our Year 10 students attended the ‘Careers for Young Women in Sport’ forum at Victoria University. Students heard directly from inspiring industry leaders and participated in hands-on masterclasses.
The forum provided our students with incredible networking and learning opportunities and demonstrated the wide range of career paths that exist in the sports industry, well beyond just playing on the field.
Keynote speaker Clare Burton (General Manager of Swimming Victoria and Vice President of Athletics Victoria) gave an excellent speech about her inspiring journey from an athletic prodigy to a respected executive. She highlighted the importance of resilience, leadership, and creating inclusive opportunities in sport. Also giving our FHS students a special shout out at the end of her speech which was lovely and caught us all by surprise!
Students had the opportunity to ask questions of the expert panel, featuring AFLW pioneer Dr Susan Alberti AC, a well known driving force for women and girls in sport, The Huddle CEO Cameron McLeod, and current VU Sport Science student Lee Bevan-Woodley. Following the panel, our students engaged in a number of masterclasses, such as Sport Coaching & Sponsorship and Marketing, where they gained real-world skills and practical advice for entering the field.
The forum gave our Year 10s plenty of inspiration and a much clearer idea of the diverse roles available to them as they start thinking about their senior years of school and future careers.
