Library

Our Library is central to the daily operation of the school.

Footscray High School Library

The Library is central to the daily operation of our school and offers welcoming and engaging spaces for students and staff to collaborate, read and study.

The Library’s vision is to nurture an ongoing love of reading in our community, to support the teaching and learning of the school curriculum, to celebrate diversity and creativity and to promote social justice. We accomplish this by providing a vast range of digital and print resources, hosting events and activities and offering professional support to help meet our community’s teaching, learning and recreational needs. Our staff are also dedicated to cultivating a sense of curiosity in students and encouraging them to be critical and creative thinkers.

Footscray High School - Students Reading In Library

Barkly, Pilgrim and Kinnear Libraries

Each of our campuses has a dedicated library space where students are welcome during recess, lunch and before and after school. Opening hours vary, depending on the day and availability of staff, but we’re generally open from 8:45am to 3:30pm on school days.
All three libraries house their own book collections which are available to read or borrow on site and also for inter-library loans. Students can simply reserve books from any campus and they will be delivered to their campus library for them to borrow.

Anywhere, Anytime Access

Our library catalogue is available 24/7 from anywhere with an internet connection. It contains a variety of digital resources to support teaching, learning and recreational reading, as well as study and research tips and referencing advice. Students can use the online catalogue to find books from any campus, borrow eBooks and audiobooks, connect to research databases, websites and more!

Online News, Resources and Databases

We subscribe to a range of reputable online databases and news services to support the teaching and learning of the school curriculum. We also provide large collections of eBooks and Audiobooks for online access.

Fiction Books

All our libraries have an extensive print and digital collection comprising classic and contemporary novels, quick reads and graphic novels suitable for a range of reading levels and interests. The loan period is two weeks but books can be renewed if needed. Our fiction collection is arranged according to genre, which allows for intuitive browsing and helps our students find the books they love quickly and easily.

Non-fiction Books

We offer a comprehensive selection of non-fiction books and eBooks, both to support our curriculum and meet the personal interests of our students. These include encyclopedia, dictionaries, textbooks and biographies on a wide range of topics.

AV and Media

We supply the school with a wide variety of audio visual media technology and professional support. At Kinnear Library, senior media and art students in particular, have access to professional quality digital video and still cameras, tripods, microphones, lighting and other AV equipment to create their folio of work for their VCE.

Film and Video

The library provides an educational digital video streaming service called ClickView Online to support the curriculum. This allows teachers and students 24/7 access to educational content that has been custom made for schools and mapped to the Australian Curriculum as well as selected movies and programs which have appeared on TV.

Clubs and Activities

Our libraries host some great extracurricular activities during lunch and recess such as puzzles, legos, chess, mindful colouring, and of course our weekly Book Club. We also facilitate events like public speakers, competitions and dress up days to support the engagement and interests of our students at school. Students can also volunteer to participate in the annual Premier’s Reading Challenge.
