Friends of FHS

All Parents, guardians and the community are most welcome and are encouraged to be active in the Friends of Footscray High School.

The aim of the Association is to organize activities that will be of benefit to you, your child and the school. It also provides another opportunity to disseminate information from the school and a forum for parents to meet informally. The Association is made up of parents past and present, ex students, members of the wider community and teaching staff.

The aims of the Friends of Footscray High School are to:

  • Contribute to the well being of the students, staff and other members of the school community.
  • Assist in building the participation of parents and friends in the life of the school generally and in the education of their students in particular.
  • Provide a forum for the discussion of education issues and contribute to the process of formulating school policy.
  • Support the work of the school council.
  • To raise funds for the benefit of the students.

School Council

Footscray High School Council has a membership of parents, community and staff representatives who work together to ensure the best possible education is provided for the students at the school.

Role of School Council

  • The school’s general educational policy.
  • The school’s long term Strategic Plan.
  • Reporting annually to the school community.
  • Approving and monitoring the school budget.
  • Developing the student code of conduct.
  • Awarding contracts for the supply of goods and services.
  • Maintenance of buildings and grounds.

The School Council, in its responsibility for educational policy development will:

  • Make the learning needs of all students its primary focus
  • Ensure effective communication between Council and the School community
  • Strive to provide a supportive environment for expressing opinions
  • Maintain a high level of integrity in relation to the conduct of debate
  • Provide a suitable physical environment and working conditions for staff and students
  • Be accountable to the School community for its decisions
  • Seek opinions from and discussion with the community
  • Develop policy directions, taking into consideration recommendations from committees specific to that policy direction, and other relevant parties
  • Ensure the accountability requirements of DE&T and other relevant authorities are met

In carrying out its business, the School Council will:

  • Be representative of the School community
  • Make decisions based on best available information
  • Display a commitment to the School community and its Strategic Plan
  • Develop and adhere to a set of written guidelines to assist Council members
  • Ensure Council sub-committees provide written reports regularly to Council
  • Ensure Council members are given the opportunity to learn and develop skills

The School Council, will in its role of liaising with the wider community:

  • Maintain a visible and regular presence at the School and School events
  • Take a leadership role in promoting a positive public profile for the School
  • Raise issues of health and wellbeing for the School Community Investigate appropriate partnerships between School and wider community including the development and maintenance of the School resource base

The 2020 Footscray High School Council members will be announced early in 2020.
